Tom was born and raised in rural Kansas. After earning B.S. and M.S. degrees inElectrical Engineering from Kansas State University and University of Kansas, respectively, he worked as a Communications Engineer in Los Angeles and then invested time learning Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan and earning a University of Michigan Ph.D. in Technology Planning. Tom then worked seven years as an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Michigan followed by seven years a Director of Web Services at Washtenaw Community College, both in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Tom and his wife, Ying-Ying, joined the Concordia community in 2008 and are proud parents of two Georgetown University students-Caleb and Kay-Anne.
